The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has apologized for the ‘unsportsmanlike’ conduct of the Nepali national women’s team. During a match against Bhutan, a batter was dismissed via ‘timed out’, an action that CAN acknowledged does not align with the spirit and values of cricket.

In a statement, CAN expressed, “We sincerely apologize for the behavior of the national women’s team. Although the dismissal was within the rules of cricket, we recognize that the true spirit of cricket extends beyond written regulations. The essence and sportsmanship of the game should always be our guiding principles.”

Secretary Khadka further stated, “As a nation on the journey of cricket development, we prioritize sportsmanship, mutual respect, and fair competition. Unfortunately, this incident failed to exemplify those values, and we are deeply concerned about the resulting disappointment.”

CAN’s statement also extended apologies to Bhutan Cricket, the players involved, and all parties affected by the incident. Additionally, CAN reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the highest standards of ethics, integrity, and sportsmanship both on and off the field.

What Happened

In the ACC Women’s Premier Cup match between Nepal and Bhutan, Nepal set a target of 114 runs. While chasing, Bhutan lost their first wicket on the very first ball. Subsequently, Bhutan’s third batter, Ritshi Choden, failed to reach the crease within the stipulated 90 seconds. Following the delay, Nepali fielders appealed to the umpire for a ‘timed out’, which was granted, declaring her out. Although within the rules, this is considered extremely ‘unsporting’.

In the match, Bhutan managed to score only 62 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in the allotted 20 overs, resulting in Nepal winning by 51 runs.
