Veteran Journalist and Author Mark Tully Dies at 90

Sir Mark Tully, the British-Indian journalist widely known as the BBC’s “voice of India”, has died at the age of 90 in New Delhi. He passed away on Sunday at a private hospital after a period of illness, his close friend and veteran journalist Satish Jacob told news agencies.

Born in Calcutta in 1935, Tully served as BBC’s New Delhi bureau chief for 22 years, reporting on key historical events across South Asia and becoming a trusted voice of Indian affairs for global audiences.

An acclaimed author and presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Something Understood, he was knighted in 2002 and awarded India’s Padma Bhushan in 2005 for his contributions to journalism and literature.

Leaders, colleagues and listeners worldwide have paid tribute to his decades-long legacy of insightful, empathetic reporting.
