Kathmandu – In the ongoing SAFF U-20 Women’s Championship in Bangladesh, Nepal secured a resounding 7-0 victory over Sri Lanka in their third match. The Nepalese team netted five goals in the first half and added two more in the second.

The match, held at the Bashundhara Kings Arena in Dhaka, saw Meena Deuba achieve a hat-trick for Nepal, while Purnima Rai scored twice and Samiksha Magar along with Sarita Nath each added one goal.

With this win, Nepal climbs to second place on the points table with two victories from three matches, having accumulated six points. Bangladesh, unbeaten in their three matches, leads the table with nine points.

Previously, Nepal had defeated Bhutan 6-1 in their opening match but lost to Bangladesh 3-2 in their second outing.

Meena gave Nepal the lead in just the seventh minute with a powerful strike from outside the penalty box that hit the net directly. Six minutes later, Samiksha doubled Nepal’s advantage with a goal.

Samiksha earned a starting spot in place of captain Birsana Chaudhary and made the most of her opportunity by scoring her first goal of the tournament. Nepal continued to create numerous scoring chances but struggled to convert them due to the muddy pitch conditions.

Meena extended Nepal’s lead to 3-0 in the 42nd minute by capitalizing on a rebound from a Sri Lankan goalkeeper save of Maya Maske’s long effort.

Nepal maintained their momentum, adding two more goals during first-half injury time. Purnima scored after making an excellent run to meet a long cross from Samiksha. Shortly after, Samiksha provided another assist for Purnima, who converted it into her sixth goal of the tournament. She had previously scored four goals in Nepal’s 6-1 win against Bhutan.

In the second half, Meena completed her hat-trick in the 70th minute, and Sarita secured Nepal’s 7-0 lead during injury time. The tournament follows a double round-robin format, with the team finishing on top crowned as the champion. Nepal will now face each team in one more match.
