34‑year‑old Zohran Mamdani has been elected as mayor of New York. Although the official declaration is still pending, The New York Times reports that he has crossed the threshold of 50 % of votes required for victory.

In the election, several media outlets had already projected him as a winner. Recent exit polls suggested that Mamdani — who was running as a progressive socialist candidate — was the strongest contender for New York Mayor.

Mamdani secured more than 50% of the votes. He received support from over 948,000 voters. In second place was former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who gained 41% of the vote, roughly 776,000 votes. Meanwhile, Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa came in third with 7.3%, which is approximately 137,000 votes.

Mamdani is not only the youngest mayor in New York in over a century, but also the first with an Indian mother and Ugandan father. He has also become the city’s first Muslim mayor. After winning, he shared a video on social media expressing his gratitude.

At the same time, former Democratic Congresswoman and CIA agent Abigail Spanberger is set to become the next governor of Virginia. Democratic Representative Mikie Sherrill from New Jersey is poised to become that state’s first female Democratic governor.

Tonight’s vote is seen as the first major electoral test since Donald Trump’s second term began. According to preliminary exit‐poll data from CNN, in four closely watched contests, it was voters dissatisfied with Trump who were dominant — suggesting a significant setback for him.

Trump had warned New York voters that if Mamdani defeated Cuomo and Sliwa, federal funding to New York City would be cut.
