Supreme Court Convicts Deepak Manange in Murder Case, Upholds 5-Year Sentence

Pokhara – Rajiv Gurung (Deepak Manange), a member of the Gandaki Provincial Assembly, has been found guilty of involvement in a murder case by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court has upheld the decision of the Patan High Court. On Tuesday, a bench of Justices Dr. Nahakul Suvedi and Tek Prasad Dungana confirmed Manange’s conviction in the murder case, endorsing the High Court’s ruling. The Patan High Court had sentenced him to 5 years in prison.

In 2004 (2061 in the Nepali calendar), Manange’s group attacked gangster leader Chakre Milan with a sword, severing his hand. Known for his involvement in criminal activities, Manange was elected unopposed to the Gandaki Provincial Assembly from the Manang (Kha) constituency in the last elections. He was also elected in 2017 (2074) from the same constituency, marking his debut in parliamentary politics.

Manange holds the record for serving as a minister in the Gandaki Provincial Government for six terms. Most recently, he resigned after the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) joined the Gandaki provincial government on September 2 (Bhadra 17 in the Nepali calendar).

He had resigned after being moved from the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure Development and Transport to the Ministry of Forests, citing dissatisfaction with the change.
