The ruling coalition is all set to push a no-trust motion against House Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar.
Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli informally put forward a suggestion during yesterday’s cabinet meet, and all the coalition constituents
endorsed it in ‘Principle’, Sources in the Nepali Congress said.
Oli’s initiative in the wake of changed political equation–break up of the Rashtriya Swatantra Party and the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist following formation of the UML-NC Government in July –is seen as a move to have a convenient Constitutional council that recommends candidates for the constitutional commissions as well Judges for the high court and the supreme court.
Indira Rana Magar belongs to the RSP and she has been at the centre of controversy after she wrote a personal letter to the US visa counsellor in the embassy here requesting them to grant visa to six of her alleged companions before she was to leave for New York to
attend a UN programme last year.
The UML however, ignored the demand for action against her as Oli and RSP Chief Rabi Lamichhane had developed a strong political bond
during the time.
A no-confidence motion would require at least two third endorsement by total strength of the House, and given the fact that OlI had
secured two third majority while seeking the vote of confidence at the time of his appointment , the ruling coalition is optimistic about her
exit.
Rana Magar’s continuation in the post as well as the constitutional council may come as a resistance or dissent to NC-UML hegemony in
appointment in the constitutional posts.
The chief whips of the two big parties—UML and NC– have been asked by the Oli and Sher Bahadur Deuba to coordinate with other
constituents of the ruling coalition and register the notice of no-confidence motion in the Parliament secretariat.
