Manisha Koirala appeals for halting Elephant polo event forever
Kathmandu: Bollywood actress Manisha koirala has appealed to the government to stop for ever the elephant polo event in the country calling it an act of cruelty.
In a Instagram post, koirala said ‘ It is time to rethink ‘ Our Legacy ‘ and give Compassion an chance Over Cruelty ,
‘ Humans have long assumed superiority over other living beings, often at the cost of their welfare.’ Suggesting that such practices should be stopped all over. elephant Polo, the only event of this kind, is scheduled to begin in Chitwan tomorrow.
‘Around the world, animals are used and tortured for human entertainment—be it bullfighting or other animal fighting, circus performances etc Nepal, celebrated for its natural beauty and cultural richness, is no exception’, she says on the post, adding, ‘ The Chitwan Elephant and Tourism Festival, while showcasing our heritage, includes events like elephant polo, rides, and races that inflict immense suffering on these majestic creatures’
‘ What kind of legacy do we want to leave behind? Shouldn’t festivals reflect joy and unity without exploitation?
Compassion, sensitivity, and respect for all beings are values that align with Nepal’s true spirit.’
She further says, ‘ Let us choose humane alternatives, ensuring our traditions celebrate life, not harm it. It’s time to honor Nepal’s beauty with kindness and set an example for the world. I do understand that elephant polo may have attracted enthusiast tourists and income, but a compassionate approach against it would earn much larger appreciation for the country. ‘
