KATHMANDU—The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has resorted to sending a fine notice via postal service to former King Gyanendra Shah, following an initial refusal by Nirmal Niwas to accept the document. The fine stems from damages incurred during a recent pro-monarchy demonstration in the capital.

On Sunday morning, a KMC team attempted to deliver the fine notice directly to Nirmal Niwas, the former king’s residence. However, officials there declined to accept it, stating that the matter was not within Gyanendra Shah’s purview.

“We had intended to deliver the letter in person at Nirmal Niwas. Our team was denied entry. Therefore, we have initiated the process of sending it through the postal system. This is a standard procedure, and it is now underway,” a KMC official stated.

The KMC has issued a fine of 7,93,000 Nepali rupees to the former king, citing various damages caused during a pro-monarchy demonstration on March 28th. These damages reportedly include physical damage to public property.

In response, the Nirmal Niwas Secretariat has maintained that the fine notice was not accepted because the matter does not concern former King Shah.

This action by the KMC comes amidst heightened scrutiny of the events surrounding the pro-monarchy demonstrations, which have sparked considerable debate within Nepal. The cities actions have also sparked a large amount of social media discourse, with varied reactions from the public.
