Kathmandu-  The government has approached the Supreme Court challenging the High Court’s decision to acquit former Nepali Congress MP Mohammad Aftab Alam in a murder case.

The Attorney General’s Office has filed an appeal against the Birgunj bench of the Janakpur High Court’s verdict. The office is demanding that Alam and all other accused be found guilty, and has also requested convictions for some individuals who received acquittals at the district court level.

Alam and others were arrested over the 2008 bomb explosion in Rautahat during the Constituent Assembly elections. They are accused of burning injured victims alive in a brick kiln. On May 28, the Birgunj bench of Janakpur High Court acquitted Alam and all co‑accused due to lack of evidence—a verdict that drew sharp criticism.

According to sources, the government disagreed with this decision, prompting the appeal to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court will first conduct a preliminary hearing and then reconsider the verdict.
