Kathmandu – The Parliamentary Committee on Education, Health and Information Technology has instructed Tribhuvan University to submit a detailed response within three days regarding a complaint that the revised MA-level Nepali curriculum is biased and exclusionary in terms of gender, ideology, and regional representation.

In its Sunday meeting, the Committee noted that a formal petition had been filed challenging the modifications to the Nepali MA curriculum. The petition argues that the new syllabus contradicts democratic and inclusive principles, removes established feminist literary works, marginalizes the progressive stream of mainstream Nepali literature, and reproduces the theoretical framework of diasporic texts verbatim in the course outline, without contextual updates.

Moreover, the petition claims technical flaws in course hours and overall structure, suggesting an imbalance and technical inaccuracies. As a result, the Committee has asked Tribhuvan University to clarify these concerns.

During its Sub-Committee on Education, Science, and Technology meeting on the 20th of Ashad (Nepali calendar), the Committee raised key questions to be answered by the university:

  • What methodologies and procedures were followed when revising and approving the curriculum?

  • Were stakeholders consulted during the drafting process, and were suggestions sought or incorporated?

  • Do the alleged technical errors—such as imbalanced credit hours and structural issues—actually exist as claimed?

  • Was any single literary work given disproportionate emphasis in constructing the curriculum?

  • Was the curriculum development process influenced by vested or conflict-of-interest interests?

The Committee’s written directive gives Tribhuvan University three days to provide clear and comprehensive information on the points raised. Following receipt and review of this response, the Committee plans to summon the relevant university officials for further discussions.

This action highlights the parliamentary oversight mechanism in ensuring academic curricula uphold democratic values, inclusivity, and technical standards.
