Kathmandu – On the occasion of the 43rd Memorial Day of the first democratically elected Prime Minister, BP Koirala, Dr. Shashank Koirala, a Member of Parliament from the Nepali Congress, stated at an event that it was BP Koirala who originally conceived the idea of the East–West Highway.

Speaking at the BP Memorial Day program held on Tuesday at the BP Museum in Sundarijal, Dr. Koirala mentioned that although King Mahendra constructed the highway, the original vision and concept belonged to BP.

“Perhaps it was BP who envisioned the East–West Highway. Indeed, the Mahendra’s government built it—but the very idea was BP Koirala’s,” he said.

MP Koirala further asserted that BP has done more for the service of the Nepali people than any other individual, and that no one else could match his contributions to the country.“When I remember BP, tears come. Whatever he did for the country, no one else has done that much. He spent 12–14 years in jail, and was imprisoned in India during the freedom struggle,” he recalled.

He observed that although the country has progressed considerably today, further change is still necessary. Dr. Koirala emphasized that BP made extensive contributions to development and that Nepal’s developmental foundation was laid through his visionary outlook.
