Multipolarity requires strong multilateral institution to maintain peace: Guterres

Kathmandu, 31 Oct: United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, today pledged UN support to Nepal’s peace process in conformity with standards set by global practices.

In his address to the joint session of parliament, Secretary Antonio Guterres said, ‘UN stands ready to support you to develop a process aligning with international standards, your Supreme Court’s rulings, and the needs of victims.’

Guterres, who spent considerable time of his address on issues of climate crisis, and the peace process, exhibited concern on both issues with a call to address them.

“Decades of progress on poverty and hunger are being reversed,” said Guterres, stressing for a strong multilateral institution to maintain peace.

‘Nepal has long been a friend to the international system. And, today that system is in dire need of refresh, revitalisation and reform. The world is in a state of flux. It is moving towards multipolarity and that is a good thing,’ he said. ‘A multipolar world provides new opportunities for leadership and balance on the global stage. But this new dynamic requires strong multilateral institutions to maintain peace. History shows us that,’ he added.

He expressed condolences to the families of Nepali students killed by Hamas and wished for the safe return of Bipin Joshi who went missing.

Thanking the government of Nepal for invitation and hospitality, Guterres said ‘what I have seen and experienced in the past few days will stay with me always – the sunlight hitting the Himalayas, the warmth of the people, the richness of your cultural diversity, and of course, the sanctity of Lumbini.’

Guterres will be folding up his four-day official visit to Nepal tomorrow.
