Man Who Attempted Self-Immolation, Ganesh Nepali, Dies

Kathmandu — Ganesh Nepali, who attempted self-immolation outside the Department of Passports in Kathmandu, has died.

Ganesh Nepali, 25, a resident of Soru Rural Municipality-1 in Mugu district, died while undergoing treatment, according to a source at Bir Hospital.

Nepali had sustained severe burns over about 55 percent of his body after attempting self-immolation on Thursday. He had been receiving treatment on a ventilator in the Burn ICU at Bir Hospital.

Meanwhile, police have taken three Kathmandu Metropolitan City police personnel into custody in connection with the incident. Two female officers and one male officer were detained on Friday for questioning, the Kathmandu District Police Office said.

According to Nepali’s family and relatives, he was driven to attempt self-immolation after municipal police immobilized his motorcycle with a wheel lock. They claim the 25-year-old, who earned his livelihood as a ride-sharing driver, felt he had no other option following the incident.
