Today marks the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This day is observed with the aim of raising awareness about the serious impact of drug abuse on society. The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on December 7, 1987, initiating the annual observance of this day on June 26. It is celebrated as a commitment to strengthening international cooperation and joint efforts to build a drug abuse-free global society.

According to the United Nations, the use of drugs and the number of drugs available in the market have been continuously increasing worldwide over the past decades. There has been a rise in the production, seizure, and use of cocaine, and the illegal trade of synthetic drugs, which are cheaper to produce and harder to detect, is also expanding.
