Mexico City – Co-host Mexico made a victorious start in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

In an exciting match held at Mexico’s historic and iconic Azteca Stadium, the home team secured an easy 2-0 win over South Africa.

Azteca Stadium, which has set the record as the first stadium in the world to host matches in three different World Cups, saw a significant presence of spectators.

Amidst strong support from the home crowd, Julian Quinones and experienced forward Raul Jimenez each scored a goal to lead Mexico to victory.

In this highly competitive and somewhat tense match, the Brazilian referee showed a total of three red cards.

Mexico, which presented an aggressive approach from the start of the game, took the lead in the ninth minute. Taking full advantage of a ball that South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams failed to control, Mexico capitalized on the opportunity.

Julian Quinones skillfully converted a pass from Eric Lira into a goal, giving the team a 1-0 lead. In the 42nd minute, another shot by Julian hit the goalpost and bounced back.
