Beijing—Chinese President Xi Jinping formally welcomed American President Donald Trump during his visit to Beijing. At the Great Hall of the People, Xi greeted Trump, stating that America and China are partners, not rivals.

Ahead of high-level talks with his American counterpart, President Xi emphasized the need for China and America to move forward as partners. In response, President Trump praised Xi as a “great leader” and expressed confidence that the relationship between the two superpowers would be “better than ever.”

The upcoming bilateral talks are expected to address complex and sensitive issues such as tariffs, technological competition, the Iran conflict, and Taiwan.

Before the meeting, Xi and Trump shook hands on the red carpet outside the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. They were welcomed by children, and both leaders inspected a military honor guard.

Accompanying Trump to Beijing are prominent figures from the technology sector, including Elon Musk of Tesla and Jensen Huang of Nvidia. Before departing for China, Trump stated his intention to urge China to be “more open” for American businesses.

Trump, who was the last American president to visit China in 2017, is returning to a more powerful and confident China amidst a world troubled by war.

Both leaders are scheduled to attend a state banquet this evening.
