Kathmandu – The 2570th birth anniversary of Siddhartha Gautam, known worldwide as the apostle of peace, is being observed today with worship, adoration, and sermons celebrating Buddha as the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Buddha Jayanti is celebrated annually on the full moon day of the month of Baisakh. This festival is observed in remembrance of Siddhartha Gautam’s contribution to establishing world peace.

Since Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana (death) all occurred on the full moon day of Baisakh, Buddhist followers in Nepal and around the world celebrate Buddha Jayanti with heartfelt reverence and devotion on this day.

“Non-violence is the foundation of peace and friendship,” is one of the many timeless messages carried by Lord Gautam Buddha. His 2570th birth anniversary is being celebrated across the country today with wishes for peace.

Buddhist followers perform traditional rituals at monasteries, viharas, and other sites with the presence of lamas and Buddhist spiritual leaders.

On this occasion, various programs are traditionally organized at places like Lumbini, Swayambhu, and Boudha to celebrate Buddha Jayanti.

Siddhartha Gautam was born as a prince in the Lumbini garden of Rupandehi district 2570 years ago, on the full moon day of Baisakh, to King Suddhodhan and Queen Mayadevi.

Born as a prince, Siddhartha Gautam became troubled by the suffering he saw in people. At the age of 29, he left the palace to pursue asceticism.
