American President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Sergio Gor, is set to arrive in Kathmandu this evening.

Gor is the highest-ranking diplomat to visit Nepal since the formation of the new government under Balen Shah. The 39-year-old serves as Trump’s special envoy for South and Central Asia and also holds responsibilities as the American ambassador to India. Known to be very close to Trump, this marks his first visit to Nepal.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gor’s visit will primarily focus on enhancing business, investment, and government-to-government relations between the two countries. His status is considered higher than that of American Assistant Secretary of State Sameer Pal Kapoor, who recently visited Nepal. During his stay, Gor is scheduled to hold formal talks with Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Waglé and Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal on matters of bilateral interest.

However, it remains uncertain whether the special envoy will meet with Prime Minister Balen Shah. According to the Prime Minister’s press advisor, Deepa Dahal, the Prime Minister is currently focused on governance and internal affairs, and a meeting schedule has not yet been finalized.

Previously, Assistant Secretary Kapoor also did not meet with the Prime Minister. Since the formation of the government under Balen’s leadership, there has been a noticeable shift away from the previous style where foreign diplomats would directly meet the Prime Minister.

If a meeting with the Prime Minister does not materialize, Gor is expected to hold discussions with other senior ministers and leaders of the Rastriya Swatantra Party before departing.
