The government, having recently used bulldozers to clear squatter settlements in Thapathali, Gairigaun, and Manohara areas, has issued an ultimatum to vacate other unauthorized settlements along Kathmandu’s riverbanks. There has been no information from the administration regarding any temporary housing arrangements for the squatters.

The Kathmandu District Administration Office announced on Wednesday that the removal of such settlements across various locations in Kathmandu will commence simultaneously from 7 AM on Baisakh 18.

The administration has directed those residing on encroached public, government, communal, or private land to completely vacate their homes and shelters by the evening of Baisakh 17.

The administration stated that this action is being taken considering the settlements along the riverbanks are unsafe and pose a risk of disaster, emphasizing the need for humanitarian rescue and disaster risk mitigation.

Families with sick members, the disabled, elderly, pregnant women, and children are urged to relocate to safe places first. Assistance from Nepal Police, Armed Police, and municipal police can be sought, and ambulances are on standby.

Arrangements have been made for security forces to assist in moving personal belongings, clothing, and livestock.

While the government has committed to providing temporary accommodation for those genuinely in need of shelter, no specific locations have been mentioned.

Although the government has stated that it will manage the education of children from displaced families, the administration’s notice lacks detailed information on this matter.

In a notice signed by Assistant Chief District Officer and spokesperson Muktiram Aryal, individuals are warned that they will be personally responsible for any additional damage if they ignore the notice and their homes are demolished.
