Kathmandu – Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel announced that individuals coming from India to Nepal are allowed to bring currency equivalent to USD 5,000 without declaration.

Speaking at the Finance Committee meeting of the House of Representatives held at Singha Durbar on Friday, Poudel explained that one can carry up to USD 5,000 worth of currency from India without declaring it at customs. He further stated that if someone wants to bring additional funds, they may declare it at customs and bring up to NRs 600,000 in Indian currency

He also mentioned that for the convenience of tourists entering Nepal, payments via QR codes and cards are accepted up to a certain limit.

Regarding the Indian ₹500 banknote, Poudel said that Nepal does not accept it because India no longer accepts the money after it goes back to India.

He further noted that once vehicles enter the customs point, checkpoints along the way have been eliminated to facilitate smoother transit.

In discussions on amendments to the Banking and Financial Institutions Bill, the Finance Minister said that the government is drafting the law to address emerging issues in the banking and financial sectors.

He emphasized that the proposal to legalize undisclosed (‘black’) money by paying tax is quite serious, and such discussions may risk keeping Nepal on the FATF grey list
