Kathmandu – The Office of the Attorney General plans to appeal a decision by the Birgunj High Court that acquitted Congress leader and former minister Mohammad Aftab Alam, who was accused of burning an injured person alive in a brick kiln following a bomb blast.

The Attorney General’s Office has instructed the High Government Prosecutor’s Office in Birgunj to swiftly send the appeal, and it is expected that the case will soon be registered in the Supreme Court.

On May 27, Judges Khusiprasad Tharu and Arjun Maharjan of the Janakpur High Court’s Birgunj bench acquitted Alam of the charges related to the brick kiln incident. Following this controversial decision, the Judicial Council has initiated an investigation into both judges.

Previously, the Rautahat District Court had sentenced Alam and three others to life imprisonment for the crime. However, the verdict was overturned by the Birgunj High Court.
