Prolonged detention by UK Border Force bars from joining the University: Khadka likely to return home

Kathmandu: Sulav Khadka from Morang missed his admission to the York St. John University as he was detained and put under rigorous interrogation for 11 days –from October 12 to 23—by the Border force leaving him with no option but to return home as the University has categorically said it can admit him only Next academic session that begins September 2023.

The response from the University and British authorities came during two rounds of meeting Nepal Embassy in London had with foreign ministry authorities there on November 23 and November 28 requesting special consideration to let Khadka join the University without loss of time, but the University refused to make any such gesture. It, however, agreed to pay to the victim airfare and expenses he incurred in course of his trip, and his release after the detention.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Foreign Ministry (UK) has written to the Ministry of Home affairs there about the ordeal Khadka went through in the hands of Border Force which held that the financial documents he had submitted to the University were not genuine. According to the Guardian Newspaper which first broke thestory, the Border Force also suspected Khadka’s credentials as he was not able to explain the course modules that he was going to study in the University.

Apparently, from October 12 to October 23 when the Border force took him in its custody at Manchester Airport and then shifted to Scotland, he was not allowed to contact University, and he missed the deadline for admission that was set for October 17.

Nepal Embassy sources said it was in contact with Khadka assuring him of all support. “With no chances of admission to any UK Universities including York St. John University for this academic session, Khadka appears keen to go back home and explore future course from home,” sources said.
