Govt lifts ban on TikTok

Kathmandu:  The government has lifted ban on popular entertainment app— TikTok— after banning it for nine months.

A decision to this effect was taken by the cabinet on Thursday endorsing the recommendation presented by the Ministry of Communication and Information. Incidentally, it was K P Oli who as the leader of the opposition had put immense pressure successfully on the Government led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda to ban the popular social media app–Tik Tok–, but he lifted the ban less than two months after becoming Prime Minister.

Officials said the Ministry of Communications has done all ground works to let Tik Tok continue as it has agreed to abide by all rules of the Nepal Government, and submit itself to any investigation against complaints.

The Nepali Congress-Maoist Centre coalition government led by Prachanda had banned Tik Tok in last November following pressure by Oli alleging that the site
was being used to boost the image and popularity of former King Gyanendra Shah, and Durga Prasai, defame republic leaders besides denigrating Nepali culture.

In between the TikTok’s Asia regional team is believed to have sent its high level team to negotiate with the Nepal government that promised to instantly address any grievances the government of Nepal may have on the contents of the Tik Tok, further adding that it will operate fully within the rules and regulations of the government of Nepal.
