Indian police lay down arms to protest senior officer’s abduction

Kathmandu, 28 Feb: Police commandos in Manipur staged ‘arms down’ protest on Wednesday against the abduction of a senior officer, according to Indian Media outlets.

Nearly 200 militants, on Tuesday, vandalised the residence of Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Imphal West and abducted him and his security guard from outside his house, said Mint, adding “The Manipur police statement did not name the group behind the abduction of the official. But people having direct knowledge of the matter said radical Meitei outfit Arambai Tenggol was involved in the incident.”

The ASP was abducted after some members of the Arambai Tenggol were detained earlier in the day for brandishing weapons and stealing vehicles-Arambai Tenggol members have been accused of murder, attacks on security forces, extortion and arson, it said referring to media reports.

The officer’s house was attacked and he was abducted to put pressure on the police to release a few armed members of the Arambai Tenggol who were arrested Tuesday morning, said the Print Quoting Police.

Later, the officer and his guard were rescued from Kwakeithel Konjeng Leikai area and admitted to Raj Medicity for medical treatment and the investigation is underway, mentioned Mint quoting Manipur Police social media handle ‘X’.
